Kerala in November:What to Pack for Warm, Humid Days

November brings Kerala its first clean light after the monsoon, so pack for 30-degree afternoons, damp evenings and one soaking you did not plan for.

Packing and weather Updated Oct 2026

The northeast monsoon is still finishing its work in November, but the pattern is clear: mornings along the Kochi and Alappuzha coast sit around 26 to 31 degrees with humidity near 80 per cent, and the rain arrives in short, heavy bursts rather than the all-day downpours of June and July. Inland, Munnar and Thekkady drop to 12 to 18 degrees after dark at 1,500 metres and above, which surprises people who packed only for the beach. Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and the backwater villages around Kumarakom all feel sticky by 11am.

Treat the month as two climates in one trip. If you are splitting a week between Kochi and the hill country, the drive from Ernakulam to Munnar is roughly four hours up the NH85 through Adimali, and the temperature can fall 12 degrees over that distance. Pack layers accordingly. The first two weeks usually carry more residual rain; the last ten days are typically the driest and busiest, which is worth knowing before you fix dates.

What the Weather Actually Does in November

Loose cotton and linen win over anything technical. Two or three short-sleeved shirts, a pair of quick-drying trousers and one pair of longer trousers for temple visits and evening air conditioning will cover most of a week. Temples such as the Guruvayur and Padmanabhaswamy complexes in Thiruvananthapuram expect covered shoulders and legs, and many insist men remove shirts, so a light scarf or shawl is more useful than a jacket. Sarongs and dhotis are cheap and widely sold locally if you prefer to buy there.

Footwear matters more than most packing lists admit. Streets in Fort Kochi and the lanes around Munnar's tea estates hold water for hours after rain, so bring sandals with grip and one pair of closed shoes that dry fast. Skip leather and skip anything suede. A compact umbrella beats a rain jacket in this heat, and a dry bag for phone and documents is worth the small cost. Laundry in Kochi and Kovalam is easy and cheap, so pack for four days rather than ten.

Clothes That Cope With 80 Per Cent Humidity

Mosquitoes are active at dusk through November, particularly near the backwaters around Alappuzha and in garden-heavy homestays. A repellent with DEET or picaridin, plus long sleeves for the evening, does most of the work. Carry oral rehydration salts, a basic first-aid kit and any prescription medicine in original packaging. Tap water is not for drinking; sealed bottled water is everywhere. If your plans include the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady, a light long-sleeve layer and closed shoes are more useful than binoculars you will rarely raise.

Sun is the other factor people underestimate. Even under cloud, the UV index on Kerala's beaches at Kovalam and Varkala runs high between 10am and 3pm. A hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen belong in the day bag. Seas are calmer in November than in the monsoon months, but currents at Varkala's main cliff beach can be strong, so swim where lifeguards are posted. Pack a small towel; you will use it more than you expect.

Health, Bites and the Small Kit

For a first November trip, I would book three nights in Fort Kochi, two in Munnar and two on the backwaters near Kumarakom, using Kochi as the arrival hub; Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is about 45 minutes from Fort Kochi by road. Rooms in Fort Kochi in November typically run from modest guesthouse rates up to mid-range heritage properties, with the last week of the month the tightest for availability because of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale years and general peak-season demand. Book early and confirm air conditioning, not just a fan.

Skip the temptation to add Varkala and Kovalam to the same week; the drive between them is around two hours and eats a day better spent on the water. Alleppey's houseboat jetties are busy and the town itself has little to offer beyond the boats, so stay in Kumarakom and take a day cruise instead. If rain closes a beach day, the Mattancherry Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town fill an afternoon well. Book a hotel with a cancellation window that stretches to 48 hours before arrival.

Kerala in November: What to Pack for Warm, Humid Days

Questions people ask

Is November a good month to visit Kerala?

Yes. The northeast monsoon is tapering, temperatures sit in the high twenties to low thirties on the coast, and the hill stations are cool and clear. The last ten days of the month are usually driest and busiest, so book accommodation early.

Do I need warm clothes for Munnar in November?

Pack one fleece or light jacket and long trousers. Munnar sits above 1,500 metres and nights can fall to 12 to 18 degrees, while Kochi the same week will be close to 30. Layers handle the four-hour drive between them.

How many clothes should I pack for a week in Kerala?

Four days' worth. Laundry in Kochi, Kovalam and most towns is quick and inexpensive, and cotton dries fast in the humidity. Bring two pairs of shoes, one that grips wet streets, plus a light scarf for temple visits.
