Each of these is offered everywhere and is either unkind, dishonest or simply worse than the thing next to it.

01 Ride an elephant The training that makes an elephant carry people is the part you do not see, and no sanctuary offering rides is a sanctuary. Instead: Periyar on foot, or Eravikulam for tahr

02 Book a three-night panchakarma The staged process cannot be compressed. A short package is a spa break dressed up as medicine. Instead: A day treatment now, a real course later

03 Sleep on a houseboat They moor in a line on the wide channel with the generator running, and the canals worth seeing are too narrow for them. Instead: A dawn canoe, and a bed on land

04 Photograph a Theyyam with a flash It is a religious event in a family shrine, not a festival laid on for visitors. Many kavus now ban cameras because of this. Instead: Ask the kavu, stand at the back, put it away
