September sits at the end of the southwest monsoon, which runs roughly June to August, and the start of the quieter shoulder before the northeast rains arrive in October and November. Expect heavy but shortening showers, lush green backwaters and fewer visitors than December. Hotel rates in Kochi's Fort Kochi and Mattancherry areas and in Thiruvananthapuram generally sit below the December peak, often in the mid-range band rather than premium, though Onam week is the exception: domestic travellers fill hotels and prices firm up.
Onam is a ten-day festival anchored to the Thiruvonam day, which falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam — late August or early September. In 2025 Thiruvonam is on 5 September; in 2026 it lands around 26 August. So a September trip may catch the aftermath or miss it entirely. Check the exact date before booking, because whether you travel during the Onam week or the week after decides everything about crowds, transport and hotel availability.
If your dates align with Onam, Thrissur is the strongest base. The city's Puli Kali procession, held on the fourth day after Thiruvonam, draws large crowds to the Swaraj Round, and the Vadakkunnathan Temple area is at the centre of it. Book a hotel in Thrissur town at least six to eight weeks ahead; rooms near the Round fill first. Kochi works as a second option, with pookalam competitions and sadya service in Fort Kochi, but the festival feels more staged for visitors there than in Thrissur.
A traditional Onam sadya — the multi-course vegetarian feast on a banana leaf — is the reason many people time a trip this way. Hotels and restaurants across Thrissur, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram serve them on Thiruvonam day, usually by advance booking only. Confirm sadya availability when you reserve your room, not on arrival. Outside the festival days, September is a good month to see Athirappilly Falls in Thrissur district, roughly 60 km from the city, when the water is at full volume.
The week after Onam is the sweet spot for a first Kerala trip in September. Alleppey, about 53 km and roughly 1.5 hours by road from Kochi, is the standard starting point for backwater houseboats and shikara boats; overnight houseboat rates drop after the festival and you can usually negotiate. Munnar, around 130 km and four hours from Kochi via the winding ghat road, is green and misty, with tea estates at their most photogenic — but the leeches and slick trails make September a month for viewpoints rather than long treks.
Skip Varkala and Kovalam if a beach holiday is the main aim. The Arabian Sea is rough in September, most swimming is off-limits, and many shacks in Varkala's Papanasam stretch are closed or on reduced hours. Kanhangad in Kasaragod district, in the far north, has steady local search interest and makes sense as a stop between Bekal Fort and the Nileshwaram backwaters, but it is not a September beach destination. If you want coast, plan it for December.
Flights and trains fill quickly around Thiruvonam. Kerala's rail network links Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode well, but advance booking on these routes is essential in festival week. Malappuram, one of the region's busier search areas, sits inland on the Kozhikode–Thrissur rail line and works as a base for the Kottakkunnu area and the Nilambur teak forests, about an hour away. Drive times are longer in September because of wet roads, so add buffer time to any hill-route transfer.
My recommendation: if your dates allow, book the week after Thiruvonam rather than the festival week itself. You get lower hotel rates, clearer roads and a calmer backwater experience, and you can still find sadya lunches in Thrissur and Kochi on the Sunday after. Reserve your hotel first, then confirm your sadya and houseboat separately — those sell out before rooms do. Two nights in Thrissur, two in Kochi and one in Alleppey is a sensible September sequence.
Is September a good month to visit Kerala?
It is a good shoulder month if you avoid the beach and plan around rain. Backwaters, hill stations and cities work well. Pack a rain jacket and expect short, heavy showers, especially in the first half of the month.
When is Onam in September?
Thiruvonam, the main Onam day, falls in late August or early September — 5 September in 2025 and around 26 August in 2026. Confirm the date for your year before booking, because hotel rates and crowds peak across that week.
Should I book a houseboat in Alleppey during Onam?
Book well ahead if your dates overlap the festival, as domestic demand is high. After Thiruvonam, availability improves and rates ease. Confirm the boat's covered areas, since September showers can be heavy on open decks.
