Where to stayin Alleppey

Choose the right neighbourhood in Alleppey and you can walk to a jetty, skip the transfer and be on the water within minutes.

Updated Oct 2026

Punnamada is where the Nehru Trophy Boat Race finishes, and the long straight of Punnamada Kayal is lined with houseboats, small jetties and a growing cluster of mid-range hotels. Staying here puts you within a five-minute walk of several boarding points, so you can leave your luggage and be on the water without a rickshaw ride. The area is quiet at night, with few restaurants outside the hotels, and the nearest ATM and grocery shops are a short auto ride away. Expect to pay more than in town for the convenience.

Punnamada and the Finishing Point: Step Off the Boat, Step Into Your Room

The trade-off is distance from Alleppey town and the railway station, about 6 km or a 15-minute drive. If your priority is a sunrise departure, this is the area I would book. Hotels here range from simple guesthouses to heritage-style properties with pools, and many offer package deals that include meals. Book at least two weeks ahead in December and January, when the race season and Christmas crowds push occupancy up.

Alleppey Town and Mullackal: Markets, Stations and Cheaper Beds

The town centre around Mullackal and the boat jetty at Kainakary is the practical choice if you arrive by train or bus. The main jetty is a short walk from many budget hotels, and you can book a shared shikara or a small houseboat for a few hours without an advance booking. The area has the best concentration of restaurants, pharmacies and shops, and the evening fish market near the canal is worth a look. Rooms here are typically cheaper than Punnamada, but street noise can be an issue.

The drawback is that the town jetty is busier and the water can be less scenic than the wide backwaters further north. If you want a balance of convenience and access, I would book a hotel within 1 km of the KSRTC bus station and the boat jetty, then take a short auto to Punnamada for a full-day cruise. Avoid the cheapest rooms right on the main road if you are a light sleeper.

Kumarakom and Kottayam: The Quieter, Greener Alternative

Kumarakom, about 15 km from Alleppey by road, sits on the eastern bank of Vembanad Lake and offers a more resort-like stay with bird sanctuary access and wider views. The drive from Alleppey takes around 30 minutes by taxi, and many hotels here have their own jetties for houseboat pickups. It is a good choice if you want to combine backwater cruising with a day at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary or a visit to the Kottayam rubber estates. Prices are generally higher than in Alleppey town.

If you are flying into Cochin International Airport, Kumarakom is about 85 km and 2.5 hours by road, while Alleppey is 75 km and roughly 2 hours. I would book Kumarakom only if you plan to spend at least two nights and want a quieter base. For a one-night backwater trip, stay in Alleppey and save the driving.

Practical Pointers for Booking Your Backwater Base

The best months for backwater travel are November to February, when the weather is dry and temperatures are comfortable. March and April get hotter and more humid, and the monsoon from June to August brings heavy rain and occasional cancellations. If you are booking a houseboat, confirm whether the price includes meals and whether the boat has air-conditioning at night, as many only run the generator for a few hours.

Check the cancellation policy carefully, especially for houseboat packages, and ask for the exact boarding point rather than a general area. For hotels, look for properties that offer free cancellation up to 48 hours before arrival. I would avoid booking a houseboat for a single night if you want to see the backwaters at a relaxed pace; two nights allow a loop through the smaller canals and a stop at a village.

Questions people ask

How far is Alleppey from Cochin International Airport?

Alleppey is about 75 km from Cochin International Airport, a drive of roughly 2 hours depending on traffic. Prepaid taxis and app-based cabs are available at the airport, and the route via National Highway 66 is the most direct.

Which area is best for a first-time backwater visitor?

Punnamada is the easiest for backwater access, with jetties within walking distance of many hotels. Alleppey town is better for budget stays and transport links. Kumarakom suits those who want a quieter, resort-style stay.

When is the best time to book a backwater hotel in Alleppey?

Book two to three weeks ahead for November to February, the peak season. For the monsoon months of June to August, you can often find better rates, but check that your hotel and houseboat operate during the rains and have a flexible cancellation policy.
